BOB's Blog

Suck it, Pokeman. HERE'S A REAL SPORT.

In times of turmoil, we need champions. Standard bearers for the unassailable triumph of the human spirit. Heros are hard to find these days, however. Where does one look to highlight these pillars of mankind's strength and potential?

The tops of mountians?

Underwater? WITH SHARKS!?!

Yes! It's Extreme Ironing! Started by a British factory worker/rockclimber named Steam (his lovely wife, Starch) in 1987. Spreading out across the world in the ensuing decades, with league formations kicking things off in New Zealand, Austrailia, the U.S. and the poetically titled German league, The German Extreme Ironing Section.

Countless variations on the sport have emerged, from Highway Ironing to Mountain Ironing to the exhilirating Bungee Ironing, a version of the sport some have called the ultimate in the thrill of extreme ironing. Second only to Trampoline Ironing.

Combining the thrills of an outdoor activity with the statisfaction of a well pressed shirt, Extreme Ironing even had an international championship, including these heats:

  • Urban- Involved ironing in/on/around a broken down car.
  • Water- A fast flowing river was the location for this station. Competitors could use surfboards, canoes or rubber rings to help them.
  • Forest- Ironing at the top of a tree did not suit all the competitors.
  • Rocky- A purpose built climbing wall, which ironists had to climb and iron a T-shirt.
  • Freestyle- The section where "anything goes".

So, if you plan on climbing that mountain, running that one hundred yard dash or doing a full biathalon, why not bring along an ironing board...and an iron...and a wrinkled shirt? Thus we can show the world the true conquering-all spirit of the human race, a breed of champions, standing on the pinnacles of the world, in an incredibly well ironed shirt.
