BOB's DVD Shelf

Sorry that there haven’t been many DVD columns lately, but it’s hard to get on and repeatedly mention that there is nothing worth owning (or even renting), and for the most part that’s been the case for about a month. Way to go, Hollywood!
Anyhow, this time around honestly isn’t much different, but I just wanted to chime in because there are two somewhat poorly-received sci-fi efforts, Push and The Knowing, that could at least be worth rentals.
Here’s the IMDB description and a trailer…for both…
“Two young Americans with special abilities must race to find a girl in Hong Kong before a shadowy government organization called Division does.”
“A teacher opens a time capsule that has been dug up at his son's elementary school; in it are some chilling predictions -- some that have already occurred and others that are about to -- that lead him to believe his ...

Sorry for no DVD column this week, I got distracted. In regards to the theater release front, there isn’t much.
Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen is the only big effort this week and just about everyone who has seen it has had something negative to say. So, only go if you have a real need for a few zillion explosions and fighting robots.
Here’s the IMDB description and the trailer…
“Decepticon forces return to Earth on a mission to take Sam Witwicky prisoner, after the young hero learns the truth about the ancient origins of the Transformers. Joining the mission to protect humankind is Optimus Prime, who forms an alliance with international armies for a second epic battle.”

Like Land Of The Lost, Year One rolls into theaters this weekend with a hint of disappointment. Should you give it a shot anyways? Maybe, but from what I’m hearing that’s only if you’re a big fan of Jack Black and/or Michael Cera.
Unfortunately though, that’s all there is to see this weekend. The sci-fi flick Moon and Woody Allen’s Whatever Works have yet to open in Austin, and I just can’t recommend something as bad as The Proposal. Good luck with the laughs!
Here’s the IMDB description and the trailer…
“When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers (Jack Black and Michael Cera) are banished from their primitive village, they set off on an epic journey through the ancient world.”

Ugh. There’s nothing worth owning this week on the “new” release front. Friday The 13th? No thanks. Madea Goes To Jail? I’d rather watch my life slowly drift away.
This means we’ll have to hit up the TV shows that are coming
to DVD, and with that Transformers: Season One.
That’s right, it’s time for a trip down memory lane so that you can
relive the best cartoon based on a toy line ever. And just in time for next Transformers movie
too!
Here’s Amazon’s description and the show’s first episode…
“Four million years after crash landing on an unfamiliar
planet, sentient robots with the ability to disguise themselves as common
vehicles awaken on present day Earth. Engaged in a crucial race to find a new
energy source for their home planet of Cybertron, Optimus Prime and the heroic
Autobots must defend the innocent people of Earth against their archnemeses,

I’d really love to be able to recommend the Duncan Jones-directed Moon this week, but it doesn’t seem to be playing anywhere around Austin. So, instead I’ll go with the Tony Scott-lead action remake of The Taking Of Pelham 123.
For the most part I’ve heard pretty mixed things about it, but at the very least there will be some entertainment value simply because Denzel Washington and John Travolta are good actors.
Here’s the IMDB description and the trailer…
“Armed men hijack a New York City subway train, holding the passengers hostage in return for a ransom, and turning an ordinary day's work for dispatcher Walter Garbe into a face-off with the mastermind behind the crime.”
