Hey Good People! I’m John Laird. Let’s talk DVDs.
Yuck. The release schedule this week is somewhere below awful. My guess is that it’s because Thanksgiving and the super sale event known as Black Friday are this week, so the assumption is that people are going to sit on their cash.
Don’t they know that we need new releases to help escape those awkward family moments at the dinner table? Come on! Help us out Hollywood.
Anyhow, if you pick up anything this week I suppose that you can go with Will Smith’s Hancock. Certainly not his best effort ever, but it’s solid.

Hello Good People! I’m John Laird. There is no doubt in my mind that many of you will take your fondness for the Twilight series straight to the theater to see the adaptation of the first book. Just so you know, reviews so far have been mixed.
What I would really like to recommend, though, is Bolt. The CG-animated tale about a dog on a mission to save someone he thinks has been kidnapped is Disney’s first flick in the “being mostly owned by Pixar” phase of their existence, and so far the feedback has been very good (Rotten Tomatoes is at 84%).
So, take the kids (yours or not) and have a little family fun in this pre-Thanksgiving weekend.

Hey Good People! I’m John Laird. Let’s talk DVDs. I hate to do this to your wallet in these poor economic times, but you have to purchase two flicks this week. There’s no other option. Sorry. On the bright side, you will be the proud owner of one of the year’s most positively reviewed films of the year, Wall-E, and one of the better comedies, Tropic Thunder.
Just in case you’ve been living under a rock, Wall-E is Pixar’s latest creation, and it follows a little robot as he discovers that there may be more to life than just working. As for Tropic Thunder, it’s about a group of actors who suddenly find themselves in the middle of a real war. The former works for adults and kids, but if I were you I’d leave the latter for those who are a bit older – note that I didn’t say ...

Hey Good People! I’m John Laird. Let’s talk DVDs. Lots of good family fun is hitting store shelves this week with the release of Kung Fu Panda and Star Wars: The Clone Wars – both of which warrant a pickup if you have kiddos. For a little more adult fare though, I highly recommend Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
Guillermo Del Toro’s last flick (he’s now knee-deep in preparation for the Hobbit) is certainly a good one that mixes the fantastical touch from Pan’s Labyrinth with the tongue-in-cheek anti-hero ways of Hellboy. So, what you get story-wise is a devil-man bent on saving the world from a bunch of mystical creatures. And yes, you read that correctly. Now off to your favorite store!
