Dog Leg Classic Golf Tournament

9th ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT FOR LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTER

Texas Humane Heroes Hosts 9th Annual Golf Tournament Benefitting Central Texas Homeless Animals

 

Texas Humane Heroes invites community members to join in the fun at the 9th annual “Dog Leg Classic” Golf Tournament fundraising event on Monday, April 28, 2014 at the renowned Teravista Golf Club in Round Rock, TX. This year’s goal is to raise $40,000 in an effort to make Central Texas a No Kill community for homeless dogs and cats.

 

Golfers can register in advance for 4-person scramble teams at $125/person www.TexasHumaneHeroes.org/golf. Registration includes breakfast, golf, lunch, prizes/awards, and much more. A silent auction will also be hosted at the event for more fundraising opportunities. The Dog Leg Classic will get off to a shotgun start at 8:30am on Monday, April 28th, with check-in beginning at 7:30am.

7th Annual ACVO® National Service Animal Eye Exam Event

THOUSANDS OF SERVICE ANIMALS TO RECEIVE FREE, SIGHT SAVING EYE EXAMS – MORE THAN 22,700 ANIMALS SERVED TO DATE

 

The 7th Annual ACVO® National Service Animal Eye Exam Event brings together

veterinary ophthalmologists and thousands of service animals for free eye exams

Registration is April 1st-30th, for May 2014 event

 

Guide dogs, handicapped assistance animals, detection dogs, therapy animals, and search and rescue dogs selflessly serve the public. To honor these animals and their work, the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) is launching the 7th Annual ACVO National Service Animal Eye Exam Event in the month of May, to screen service animals who dedicate their lives to serving the public.  Dr. Laura Barnes, Diplomate ACVO of Central Texas Veterinary Eye Care along with more than 250 board certified veterinary ophthalmologists throughout the U.S., as well as Canada and Puerto Rico,  will be donating their time and resources to provide free, sight-saving eye exams to thousands of eligible service animals.  Registration for service animal owners and handlers runs from April 1 - 30, 2014 at www.ACVOeyeexam.org

 

Since the program launched in 2008, nearly 22,700 service animals have been examinedIn addition to dogs, other service animals including horses and even a service donkey named Henry have received free sight saving exams. 

 

Ben, is a black American Field Labrador who can climb a three story ladder, unassisted.  Ben’s eyesight is vital to his job.  He is a search and rescue dog from Ventura, CA, that can be called upon at any time to rescue someone who is alive, during a disaster.  Ben’s handler, Eric Darling, has brought Ben to participate in the ACVO/Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam Event for two years in a row.  “Catching something early is huge!” says Eric. “This event ensures that we have the opportunity to get this exam done, with no excuses.”

 

Quincy, an 8-year-old Golden Retriever, is a mobility service dog.  Quincy assists Sandra Ball of Beltsville, MD a number of different ways, including:  helping Sandra up and down the stairs, opening doors, taking off shoes, pushing buttons and fetching the telephone.  Sandra has brought Quincy to the ACVO/Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam Event since 2009.  During an eye exam, it was discovered that Quincy had Golden Retriever Uveitis, a serious condition that can result in vision loss.  Signs of the disease are not always obvious to the owner, so it can often progress to an advanced stage before affected animals are presented to a veterinary ophthalmologist.  “If it were not for this program, I wouldn’t have taken Quincy to an eye exam to begin with,” says Sandra. “This exam meant possibly saving Quincy’s sight!”

Lemonade Day is a FREE, fun, experiential learning program that teaches youth how to start, own, and operate their own business using a lemonade stand as the teaching tool. Each child who registers receives a backpack with an Entrepreneur Workbook that teaches them the 14 lessons of Lemonade Day like creating budgets, setting profit-making goals, serving customers, repaying investors, and giving back to the community. Along the way, they acquire skills in goal-setting, problem solving, and gain self-esteem critical for future success. On May 4, kids all over Austin will launch their lemonade stands. They keep all the money they make and are encouraged to spend some, save some, and share some. Young professional group INK raises HIV/AIDS funds, awareness

 

INK, a newly-formed group dedicated to uniting young professionals, advancing the Paul Kirby Emergency Assistance Fund at AIDS Services of Austin, and promoting safe sex, invites you to its inaugural event, INK’s Spring Brunch, May 4, 2014, 11 to 2 p.m. at the Hummingbird House, 12805 Arroyo Doble Dr., Manchaca, Texas 78652.  Every single penny raised at this — and every INK event — will go directly to the Paul Kirby Emergency Assistance Fund, which serves as a cash fund of last resort for clients of AIDS Services of Austin.

Saint Louise House to Host Mother’s Day Weekend Event at Green Pastures

3rd Annual Mother & Me Tea to Honor Mothers and Women

 

Saint Louise House will host its Mother and Me Tea on Saturday, May 10th at Green Pastures from 12:30pm-3:00pm. Now in its third year, the Tea welcomes guests of all ages to celebrate the accomplishments of mothers while supporting Saint Louise House’s mission of helping families overcome homelessness. More than 250 supporters are expected to gather for the Mother’s Day weekend celebration.

 

Guests will enjoy games, children’s activities, refreshments, a raffle, and more during this afternoon event. Saint Louise House also welcomes Kristin Armstrong as the Tea’s Honorary Chairperson. “The Tea is a vibrant celebration of mothers – and all of the special women in our lives,” says Sharon Bieser, Executive Director. “Around the world and within our community, we recognize the struggles that so many mothers overcome to ensure their children’s happiness, safety and success.” Chelsea Allman Kumler, long-time volunteer and realtor at Turnquist Partners, is the Chairperson of the Tea. She adds, “The Mother & Me Tea is quickly becoming one of the premiere events for mothers and children in Austin. I can’t imagine a more worthy cause or a better way to spend Mother’s Day weekend.”

This unique event offers something for everyone.

The school’s gated campus provides a safe, closed course with an indoor pool and mixed-terrain running course utilizing, stairs, sidewalks, grass and TSD’s track; with prizes and course distances for three age groups: Juniors (ages 7-10), Seniors (ages 11-14) and Adults (ages 15+).

Hosted annually at the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) benefitting the school’s physical education programs, the Ranger Triathlon is a USAT sanctioned event, and open to the community.

2014 American Freestyle Open Flying Disc Championships

Austin Freestyle Club will Host the 2014 American Freestyle Open Flying Disc Championships

The Austin Freestyle Club is pleased to announce that it has been selected by the Freestyle Players Association to host the 2014 American Freestyle Open Flying Disc Championships on November 14-16 at Zilker Park Rugby Field, in Austin.

The Austin Freestyle Club, home to several World Champion Freestylers, plans to welcome over 75 top Freestyle players from around the globe, who will participate in both Open Pairs and Co-op Freestyle Competitions during the championship.

“We’re very happy that our Austin chapter has been selected to host this year’s championship, and believe that the event will complement our community’s rich live music culture,” said Chris Baker, Event Co-Director and Promoter. “Freestyle competition features 2 or 3 players performing 4-5 minute routines, all set to popular music,” he continued.

During the competition, players will be judged based on difficulty, execution, and artistic impression as they make unusual throws, athletic gyrations, trick catches and gymnastic-like moves. “Of all the Frisbee sports, Freestyle is probably the most ‘crowd-pleasing’ event,” Baker said.

The 2014 American Freestyle Open Championships will feature World Champion Freestylists, including local Austinites, James Wiseman the current top-ranked player and 2012 World Co-op Freestyle Champion; and Dan Yarnell, a 3-time former World Champion.

The championship event is open to the public and admission is free.
