The legendary vocalist Whitney Houston’s legacy continues to thrive 7 years after her untimely death, as a new remixed version of her cover of “Higher Love,” by producer Kygo, has been released to American audiences.
This comes as no surprise as Pat Houston, the sister-in-law and sole executor of Whitney Houston’s estate announced recent plans to “awaken the commercial potential of a dormant megacelebrity brand.” Originally by Steve Windwood, the track was first released by Houston as a Japan-only bonus track on Whitney’s third album, I’m Your Baby Tonight.
Calling the release a “collaboration,” Pat Houston shared the confidence she had with giving Kygo the project to rework, stating “Kygo was the first person that was mentioned. He put his spin on it and did a fantastic job,” to Rolling Stone.
The track is a subtle yet great reworking of the lesser known Houston track. It modernizes the song while still showing respect to the late singer’s powerful vocals, with Kygo making his passion for the project clear in statements he said himself.
“I was honored when the Whitney Houston estate reached out and presented me with the opportunity to work with one of the greatest female vocalists of all time. I reworked the song from scratch and am really happy with how it turned out!” the producer stated. “I was trying to make it sound like something that she would’ve done, but also something that’s my style,” he added.
Kygo performed “Higher Love” for the first time at PrideFestival Utopia this past Sunday, June 30th.
