55 years and Doctor Who has yet to have been a woman. The 13th regeneration of the infamous Dr. is Jodie Whittaker, 36, and she is “more than honored to play the role.”
Show writer Chris Chibnall said “the time was right. If the show hadn’t made this decision, we would have been behind in the world, and Doctor Who has got to be out front leading the world.”
More than 18 million Doctor Who DVDs have shipped world wide, 12 million action figures in the last 13 years since the shows re-launch, and in 2013 a 50th anniversary episode was screened in 94 countries. Here in the U.S., the show has become the flagship series for BBC America, which premieres the season this fall. The first episode will be simulcasted so it screens at the same time in the U.K. There is no doubt in Jodie Whittaker’s mind that this is a heavy load on her shoulders. She says “there’s no rules, and it’s liberating…but equally terrifying.”
Bob knows she will kick butt as the new Doctor. We’re all rooting for ya here at BOBFM!
