The number of coronavirus cases has continued to climb, spiking up to 200 as of Monday morning within Austin and Travis County. Austin Public Health says the majority of the infections continue to be found within younger adults ages 20-39. On Friday, officials also announced the first death in the county. Austin Public Health says the patient was a woman above the age of 70 with significant health issues prior to contracting the virus.
Williamson County’s number is now up to 37, and a man in his 70s who was reported dead on Saturday now brings the total dead in the Austin-area up to two.
“To the family, we are heartbroken for your loss,” said Williamson County Judge Bill Gravell. “To the rest of the community, I emphasize that it is everyone’s responsibility to stay home and stay safe in order to protect our community, our families, and especially the most vulnerable among us.”
“It’s unfortunate that our county has lost one of its residents because of the spread of this virus,” said Dr. Lori Palazzo, local health authority for Williamson County. “Williamson County and the Health District extend their deepest condolences to the patient’s family and friends.”
Investigations conducted by the Williamson County and Cities Health District will identify potential contacts exposed to the virus and provide close contacts guidance about the virus and monitor them for the development of symptoms.
The Department of State Health Services shows 2552 confirmed cases as of Monday morning. 34 people have died across the state.
