Britney Spears was scheduled for a court hearing on June 23 to speak out about her conservatorship.
This was the first time the pop star ever discussed the conservatorship agreement in an open-court. The court-ordered conservatorship was arranged by her father James Spears in 2008. 13 years later, Spears publicly addressed her feelings about the arrangement to Judge Brenda Penny, and the entire world.
The pop icon expressed discontent toward her father being a co-conservator for all of her finances. Jamie Spears controls what’s estimated to be a $59-$60 million fortune, and it was in 2020 when Spears told her attorney that she does not want her father overseeing her estate anymore.
In yesterday’s court hearing, the artist revealed that she has been “in denial.” “I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized. You know, fake it til’ you make it. But now I’m telling you the truth, OK. I’m not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m so angry it’s insane and I’m depressed.”
Additionally, Spears brought up specific treatments that she said were mandatory. The pop star stated that she was placed on lithium, birth control and was ordered to take therapy sessions.
“I was told right now in the conservatorship, I’m not able to get married or have a baby,” Spears said. “I have an I[U]D inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant. I wanted to take the IUD out so I could start trying to have another baby, but this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have children, any more children,” said Spears.
Following the hearing, many artists and celebrities shared their support for Spears. Among those sending out love to the pop artist was her ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake. The two dated back in 1999 and split in 2002. See Timberlake’s Twitter thread plus words of support from Mariah Carey, Halsey, Khloe Kardashian, and more below.
After what we saw today, we should all be supporting Britney at this time.
Regardless of our past, good and bad, and no matter how long ago it was… what’s happening to her is just not right.
No woman should ever be restricted from making decisions about her own body.
