Cinco de Mayo falls on Taco Tuesday this year, which means Austin is going all out. Whether you want margaritas on a patio, live music, family-friendly festivals, bar crawls or even cookie decorating, there’s something happening all across the city this week.
Here are some Cinco de Mayo events and spots to check out around Austin:
Matt’s El Rancho
One of Austin’s most iconic Tex-Mex spots is making a rare exception this year by opening on a Tuesday specifically for Taco Tuesday and Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Usually closed Tuesdays, Matt’s is expecting a huge crowd with margaritas, food and patio vibes all day long. Plus, one of our Waterloo Media stations (BOB-FM) will be out there for a special event!
Cinco de Mayo Festival at Republic Square
Looking for something family-friendly? Join the Mexic-Arte Museum on Saturday, May 2 from 9 am to 2 pm for a free, family-friendly Cinco de Mayo Festival at Republic Square. The downtown event celebrates the history and culture behind Cinco de Mayo with interactive art activities, live traditional music, authentic Mexican food vendors, and a local artisan market featuring handcrafted goods from Austin artists.
Cinco de Mayo Downtown Bar Crawls
If your ideal Cinco celebration involves hopping between bars with margaritas in hand, downtown 6th Street is full of celebratory bar crawls from now through Tuesday. If you’re looking to party this Saturday, check out THIS bar crawl for themed cocktails, tacos and DJS. And if you’re waiting until Tuesday, head over to Coyote Ugly Saloon for their day- of crawl.
Cinco de Mayo Cookie Decorating Class at Blue Agave Tex Mex
Want something more unique and creative? Blue Agave Tex Mex is hosting a beginner-friendly Cinco de Mayo Cookie Decorating Class on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Tickets are $28 and the event offers a fun alternative to the typical bar scene, featuring six themed sugar cookies. Everything is prepped and ready for decoration upon arrival and is great for kids as well!
Cinco de Mayo Extravaganza at Hotel Vegas
East Austin is going big this year with a massive Cinco de Mayo Extravaganza at Hotel Vegas and Volstead Lounge. Starting at 3 pm, the free event will feature live music, DJs, mariachi performances, piñatas, paletas, drink specials and even free tacos during happy hour with select drinks. If you want an all-day party, this is definitely a fun move!
1,000 FREE Suadero Tacos at Blue Owl Brewing
Last but not least, one of the coolest food events happening this Cinco de Mayo is the 1,000 FREE Suadero Taco Drop at Blue Owl Brewing in East Austin. The event celebrates the holiday Combo with free suadero tacos served fresh, plus $3 salt-and-lime lagers and a one-day-only return of Austin Hard Seltzer – Mexican Martini. The event lasts from 3 pm to 7pm, but get there early to secure some tacos before they run out!
