40 years ago today Garfield first appeared as a comic strip. Creator Jim Davis pulled audiences in by having them follow the life of Garfield the lazy orange cat, his owner Jon who dislikes Mondays, and the dog Odie.

As of 2013 the comic was syndicated in about 2,580 newspapers and it holds the Guinness World Record for most syndications. The Garfield brand is earning a billion dollars a year from merchandising, books, films, and television.
